Alter 500

Classic FET Compressor

Alter 500 is a single-channel FET limiting amplifier designed in the 500-series format, drawing direct inspiration from the legendary UREI 1176 compressors of the 1970s. Built for speed, punch, and attitude, it delivers the unmistakable character that made FET compression a studio staple. With stepped input and output controls, six ratio settings including extended 1:1 and 2:1 options, and a dedicated Slam Mode, Alter 500 offers both classic control and modern flexibility. Fast, assertive, and unapologetically musical, Alter 500 excels on vocals, drums, guitars, and aggressive program material where impact and presence matter most.

Classic FET Architecture, Refined
Alter 500 is built around a fast, responsive FET compression topology inspired by the iconic limiting amplifiers of the 1970s. Designed as a single-channel 500-series module, it delivers the unmistakable punch, presence, and immediacy that FET compressors are known for, while offering expanded control and modern reliability for today’s studios.

Slam Mode for Aggressive Dynamics
A dedicated Slam Mode switch engages extreme limiting behavior independent of the ratio selection. This allows engineers to achieve explosive compression effects, dense harmonics, and forward energy without sacrificing consistency or control.

Stepped Controls for Precision and Recall
All primary controls are fully stepped, enabling precise, repeatable settings that are ideal for recall-critical workflows. Separate input and output gain stages allow accurate gain staging while shaping tone and impact.

Studio-Grade Signal Path
The electronically balanced input feeds a discrete dual-stage amplifier design, while the IGS Custom output transformer delivers depth, punch, and harmonic weight. A relay-based hard bypass preserves complete signal integrity, and a 20-segment LED bar provides fast, accurate gain-reduction feedback.

Designed for Vocals, Drums, and Impact-Driven Sources
With ultra-fast attack options and selectable release times, Alter 500 excels on vocals, drums, guitars, and parallel compression duties, making it a powerful and versatile dynamics processor in any 500-series rack.

We needed hardware that looks good in client-facing environments and performs consistently. Their products tick both boxes. The minimalist design is beautiful on camera, and the durability has been excellent.

The dynamics processor is ridiculously good. Smooth compression, no weird pumping, and the controls respond exactly as expected. It’s become my go-to for vocals and acoustic guitars.

We installed their signal distribution system across two rooms, and it’s been flawless. Zero hum, zero dropouts. The build quality is impressive — you can tell it’s made to last. Easily one of our best purchases this year.

Our studio upgraded to their 19″ rackmount units and the improvement was immediate. The layout is intuitive, connections are rock solid, and the unit hasn’t glitched once. Setup took minutes and everything just works.

The stereo imaging is tight, the low end is controlled, and the build feels solid. It’s the first time I’ve used monitors in this price range that actually translate well outside the studio.
